REaladi, Inc. sought to bring down the cost and complexity of design & fabrication of medical prosthetic limbs. The Boeing Company spin-out applied three-dimensional computer-aided design techniques to the fabrication of the prosthetic socket, the portion of the prosthetic that establishes the fit to the patient. To substitute this more automated, less by-hand process, REaladi would need the assistance of an existing prosthetics laboratory that would test its product with patients and compare results to traditional plaster casting methods. At the same time, REaladi would have to learn the cost structure and selling dynamics of the medical prosthetics industry.
